Sweet Cobra - Mercy
First off, I have no idea how to classify this band. They are 100% awesome, but there really so many influences here that OTHER would be my first choice, followed by hardcore and maybe metal? Think Black Flag meets Sabbath meets Jesus Lizard.
Sweet Cobra hails from the music powerhouse of Chicago, IL and right from the get go these guys let you know that you can't fuck with them.
What at first listen seems to be a dirty, loud wall of noise becomes a sparkling clean, excellently mixed and well written work of art upon closer sonic inspection. Despite having monstrous guitars and filthy distortions, pounding drums and bass with such raw vocals throughout, each element of the songs are clearly audible and the ambient parts are so fitting the mood of the songs that it's downright scary.
My favorite track on the record is 'Silvered' because it showcases the immense writing talent that lies within this band - it's a bit longer than the others but incorporates longer harmonized vocals that even sound like a duet with Rivers Cuomo in parts and lets the band play with ambience a bit more.
There aren't many bands that could do what Sweet Cobra are doing, and with a record that sounds so mature and confident already from a decade of practice and crafting such a unique musical signature, these guys are bound to be doing big things even as a 3 piece - sadly, guitarist Mat Arluck lost his ongoing fight with cancer after completing this record.
