WASHINGTON — U.S. Sens. Pat Toomey and Bob Casey will rescind their Medal of Freedom nomination for Penn State football coach Joe Paterno in the wake of the child abuse scandal involving his former assistant coach.
The award is considered the highest honor a civilian can receive. Toomey, Casey and U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson, who represents State College, nominated Paterno in early September.
"Coach Paterno over the years has shown tremendous character and loyalty," the lawmakers wrote to President Obama. "Throughout his time at Penn State, he has remained committed to reaching goals without sacrificing the ideals that are central to higher education."
Both senators are expected to issue statements shortly.
