I don't think that is what he is saying at all. He is just telling his experience. He's not the first person to have to do that and he certainly won't be the last. This world has never been kind or an easy to place to live for many and that will never change.

Sidney how much do you pay per year in onboarding new employees? All factors - hiring them on, training, etc. Can you quantify the productivity lost by having to train a new employee to do the job of someone who quit after 6 months or a year?

I could take a good guess at it but I'm wondering why you are asking and how you would like to apply that to what I stated earlier?

I know you have run a successful business for years now and will probably "school" me on how we really should be doing it.....

No, I honestly don't know and was curious what the answer was. Obviously I was going to compare that with how much a raise in your minimum wage would cost. Like if raising your minimum pay by $2 an hour would lead to x% gain in employee retention vs. the productivity cost of losing those employees with the current lower wage.

I don't know. Would be a cool exercise though.

We have found over the years that a raise in hourly pay is only a portion of why an employee stays with our company. I have tried the method of paying the "most in town" and the only thing that got us was the same shit we were all ready seeing....10 hires a month and only 3 remaining after 3 months (all averages off the top of my head).

Bigger factors such as happiness with their work, made to feel appreciated, good overtime and steady work are just as important if not more.

My guess would be that we spend around $250 to hire someone when all is said in done. There are so many other factors though that can't be accounted for until they happen.

Yeah fair enough. I don't know enough about your business to say much more. Glad you've played around with it though.

For me personally, good benefits, especially 401k, equity, and vacation time, mean way more than straight salary.

I’ll say it: if a job paid me $25 an hour I’d sink with that ship.

I'm not trying to sound like an asshole but if I do so be it.

Most of you really don't see the side I see on a daily basis. I never realized how much of an issue work ethic is in this country until I started doing this job.....it is really fucking bad. I do agree that there are a lot of businesses out there that fuck their employees but there are easily more that actually do the right thing.

Just had an employee not show up this morning because even though she was told last week that she would start with a client today "she says" she never got the email information as well. Now did she think to maybe call us at some point and say "hey never got that email?"....nope....she just simply didn't show up. This is just a very small example

On the other hand their are a lot of people who work hard for what they earn. I would say easily 70% to 80% of our people are good. Not all of them full time either. It's that 20% that really fucks everything up though.

I see a lot of people who have made REALLY poor decisions in their past that have impacted their lives to the degree where it is hurting them now later in life....who's fault is that? Why should a business bend over backwards to help someone like that over and over and over again? I can only hand hold so much.

Nothing about that is egregious. Very little of that has to do with the fact that there needs to be a wage adjustment in this country to combat stagnation. Just because you, or anyone, has some shitty employees doesn't mean that the purchasing power of the entire class of working poor in this country should decrease over time.

Im a self hating clown because I scraped away at a living on low wages and through consistent hard work and a little luck I was able to achive my dreams. Never said I wanted anyone to experience anything, only refuted the blanket statement that noone could live off $12 an hour. Dicksucker is just an angry condescending douchebag who projects his shitty personality on everyone else so he can feel like he is above them. You arent shit, no one cares and you are wrong. Go have a good cry with a glass of wine and change your tampon.

Anyway no, you're a self hating clown because you think the fact that YOU worked for a shitty wage means it's cool that other people should have to.

You're switching up your whole schpeel right now saying "I never said I wanted anyone to experience the same thing" but if that wasn't your point in the first place then what was? That $12 is okay to live on because you did it? How long ago was that? What kind of quality of life did you have? Did you have a child? Multiple children? A good work to life balance? Benefits? A comfortable route to retirement savings?

People CAN live on potatoes and broth in internment camps, and have. Should they chime in and say people who want the minimum wage to be raised are pussies?

I'll say it again: fuck the fuck off. Your experience making a shitty wage and getting away with it has nothing to do with anybody else's. If you just want to write about yourself, go buy yourself a diary.
