soapbox rant in 3...2....1....
what a shithead. when i was 11-14 i worshiped this guy. i got his signature first base mitt, i used his bats until i stopped playing baseball. when i would lift in high school i would obsess over the size of my forearms because i wanted them to be huge and scary like his. he was my hero along with millions of other kids that caught the 1998 season and remember it as the best in recent history.
i totally agree with what brian said. he didn't do anything to save himself in the eyes of anyone with half a brain. the fact that ballplayers used steroids doesnt quite offend me as much as it did a couple years ago, because athletes will do anything to get an edge in any sport, any way they can. i get it. what really still disgusts me is how everyone in baseball (literally, everyone) knew what was going on in the game and turned a blind eye to it, and how they still let players lie to the public in bold face about it.
tony la russa knew his players were using roids in the 80's. and the 90's. and as recently as a couple years ago probably. the owners knew it, the general managers even exchanged handwritten notes amongst each other about who was and wasn't using steroids. they should just all out each other or come forth and release the names on the 2003 barometer test. maybe if the game as a whole makes an effort to put the mess behind it, people won't hold suspicion of almost every player (as they should. i know i do.)
fuck you, mark mcgwire. fuck your cheating lying protected ass. jose canseco is my hero now. he is the only person in baseball that has nothing to lose by telling the truth, and so far he's done just that.
