Phils sign Blanton to extension
Avoiding arbitration with their No. 3 starter, the Phils signed Joe Blanton to a three-year, $24 million extension Thursday. The new deal takes care of his first two free agency years.

Blanton went 12-8 with a 4.05 ERA in 31 starts for the Phils last season and made four appearances (two starts) in the postseason. In 44 total regular season starts for the club over the past two years (2008-09), Blanton is 16-8 with a 4.09 ERA and the team is 26-18 (.591) in those games. He pitched at least 6.0 innings in 29 of those 44 starts.

he had some decent stats last year but still not worth 8 mil a year in my opinion, but he will keep the rotation consistant at least

Same as what Eaton was making. I'd much rather have Blanton taking that money than Eaton

unfortunately, pitchers, especially 3-5 are in high demand due to how terrible most of the ones out there are.

8 million is about what a league-average-ish pitcher with his service time should make

the reasoning was awful by the gm sd the reason for the extension was due to him pitching well during the playoff stretch..blanton was "an instrumental piece of their success in the postseason" they why not pitch him in the world series? dont understand at all

stat nerd time

blanton has averaged 32 starts a year for the last 5
thats about 200 innings-ish (what you want in these times from your starters)
at around a 4.00 ERA (hair under the NL average of 4.20)

that kind of performance is actually worth a good amount more than 8 million dollars. the phillies made a pretty smart move here.

its a bit high, but he's a pretty consistent pitcher who stays in games which is definitely something they need since it doesn't seem like there's gonna be any great upgrades to the bullpen

blanton was asking for 10 to start. phils came back with 7.5, they settled on 8.

also, the flyin' hawaiian signed for 3 years for 22. official announcement to come tomorrow, most likely.
