Oakland Athletics prospect Grant Desme is retiring from baseball to enter the priesthood.

Desme was recently selected the 2009 Arizona Fall League MVP and was considered one of the top prospects in Oakland's system. The 23-year-old outfielder batted .288 with 31 homers, 89 RBIs and 40 stolen bases in 131 games at Class-A Kane County and Stockton last season.

He then hit .315 with a league-leading 11 home runs and 27 RBIs in 27 games in the fall league.

"We respect Grant's decision and wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors," Athletics general manager Billy Beane said in a statement.

Desme was a second-round pick selection in the 2007 draft after being named Big West Player of the Year at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Whether you think its right or wrong, he's going after something he obviously has a great passion for. So for anyone to have a problem with that is really kinda sad on their part.

its just an incredibly odd choice, given that he was basically named one of the best minor league players, and if you scale his numbers up to a full 162 game season he's just shy of being a 40/40 guy with around 100 RBI.

(yes, i know the comparison doesn't truly work that way, but damn)

also considering he could have held off on the priesthood thing until after his baseball career. theres not age cutoff in being a priest. only in being a priest's date

I wonder if he's going to give his $432,000 signing bonus away. He should if he's going to take a vow of poverty...
