right now i'm playing my esp viper with a dod grunge (that i got for free) through my traynor yba-3 custom bass head. when i try to get a dirtier sound out of it it sounds like im doing a shitty direct recording on a computer.

should i just pick up an hm-2 on ebay to get more of what i'm looking for? or are there any other suggestions?

Distortion pedals are a slippery slope. Too many options that never end up doing exactly what you want.

hey dave, there were 2 HM-2s at the local shop last time i was there for like $45. i could check again and maybe pick one up for you if you want.

i'm going to take a quick look at a few of the places around here first, but i may have to take you up on that.

look into the Earthbound Audio Supercollider. It's more of a fuzz/overdrive, but it sounds better than most distortion pedals out there.
