Other than drinking Tecate and shredding some local spots, what should I checkout/do?
If you didn't live there please answer anyway.
i lived in san antonio but was in austin a bunch of times since it's about a 1.5 hour drive and there's no reason for san antonio to exist. Rainey Street is pretty cool, it's a street of bars that look like houses and most of them have some good outdoor seating. a couple of them were more club-like, but there were some good beer selections and decent music and people at them.
there's also sixth street downtown. that's the street austin seems to be known for where it's just bars on bars on bars. it has patches where it's mostly kids turning 21, but "further down" (i think toward the river) was more adult friendly places that had food as well. you really cant go wrong with food in that city, and a lot of it seemed to be close-ish to sixth if not on it.
also, there's a place on sixth street basically at the start (or end) near a lot of the hotels called Death Metal Pizza. it's a late night pizza place and they play death metal. schnell is probably there right now.
waterloo records is a pretty cool record store, and encore has a lot of good stuff as well if you're into records.
besides eating and drinking i dont know much else to recommend
