I went over our gun laws yesterday. I'd say they are far superior to American gun laws by a large margin.
They class the weapons and depending upon the class, you apply for different permits requiring different courses and waiting periods.
I do think though there should be one additional high level classification with extreme vetting that allows for concealed carry. The rate of gun violence is lower here, yes, but there is still enough I believe self protection should be allowed by those with a squeaky clean record, the proper mental capacity and training.
Could I buy a pistol? Yes. But it could only be taken to approved gun ranges and must be transported in an opaque plastic government approved container that locks. You are not allowed to stop anywhere on your way to the gun range from your home unless you need gas or have a medical emergency. Too much to deal with for me to ever consider doing this so I can shoot at pieces of paper.
