Synopsis: The first ever post-apocalyptic punk rock musical produced in the People's Republic of China.
"Dragon City" claims to be the very first punk flick ever to be made within the People's Republic of China. The ambition of the film is admirable, even if the budget and production values aren't all there. Set in the future, in a time where money has no value and peace has been abandoned, we follow the Chinese punk band NO NAME in search of life in post-apocalyptia.
After a string of misadventures, including a ghoul evasion, a meat cleaver incident, and an accidental piss drinking, the band encounters an old English-speaking redneck who’s just looking for a friend. He's more than willing to help the band, and he leads them on a scavenger hunt through the debris-ridden streets until they come upon a building full of band gear including a PA system, drum kit, bass, and guitars. The band sets up and starts to rock only to find out that "Outsiders" (or, survivors trapped between the ghouldom and peace) have gathered around the exterior of the building demanding entry. The band allows it, and word quickly spreads of their awesome jams. Eventually, more and more survivors show up for the show until the crowd is substantial. Everything is going as well as can be expected until something happens to one of the main characters.
"Dragon City" looks and feels like a punk rock music video from the 90s, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It has the DIY spirit and will appeal to fans of indie horror flicks and b-movies. Also, this particular DVD package has over two hours of bonus features including a director's commentary, additional short films and music videos, and a ton of additional NO NAME live performances. Overall, it's a pretty worthwhile bundle of goods from our friends in the Far East.
