So I’ve had the new Abscess,
Dawn of Humanity, for about 2 weeks now which has given me plenty of time to listen to the album and form an opinion. When I review an album I like to listen to it and just write what pops in my head, however, this time, that was not the case. This is the third time I’m attempting to write this review. I feel the same way about the new Abscess as I do about writing this review; uninspired.
Dawn of Humanity sounds exactly how you expect it to; mid-paced (but not in a slam type way), punk inspired riffs (but not crusty enough to be crusty) your run of the mill death metal vocals. Really, there isn’t a lot of room for variation in death metal, and pretty damn hard to do something unique in death metal, and maybe what Autopsy was doing 15 or so years ago was unique, but with Abscess still carrying that torche in 2010, the album feels dated, but not in a good way. Not in the way where something is released in 2010 but sound like it was recorded in 1990, no, this is dated in the aspect that this boring bland form of (black-ish i guess)death metal is uninteresting.
By NO means is this a bad record, if you love Abscess, then you will probably really like this. I would highly recommend this album for people who love all things Abscess, people who reject the new school and enjoy bland sounding re-hashed death metal or you are really just an asshole. I have the
Tormented album, I have the demo and that’s all you really need. I’m glad this album for this review was a digital download because I don’t really need any more metal cds getting stepped on in my apartment.
