Blacklisted - Peace on Earth, War on Stage

By now, if you live anywhere around the Philadelphia area, like hardcore and don't live under a rock, you know Blacklisted. Over the past few years, they have risen to become the biggest band in the area and one of the biggest in the country. When they announced "Peace on Earth, War on Stage," buzz immediately started. Would it stack up to their older stuff? Could they possibly get better? The answer to both questions is yes.

Although it is only 4 songs and clocks in less than 6 minutes, "Peace on Earth, War on Stage" contains Blacklisted's best material. Although the formula hasn't changed too much (the tone is still basically the same, the guitars are as furious as ever, and kids will still be murdering each other at shows), vocalist George Hirsch has expanded his vocals and actually sings on this release (or, at least, sings as much as a hardcore singer can). This added element single-handedly makes this EP great.

Beginning with the track "Ivory Tower," the pace is set. Although not the best track on the recording, it is a good opening track, and it is very hard to resist singing along to the repeated yellings of "NO SHELTER" towards the end. Track 2, "Memory Layne," starts out fast and then slows down, breaking into a groovy singing part and ending with George showcasing his newfound style. "Canonized" might be the best song that the band has ever written. It is hard to not start tapping your feet as the song starts, and then it is impossible not to sing along. The singing is most prominent on this track, and it works great. The EP ends with "Setting Sun," which starts out sounding a lot like an older Blacklisted song-bass heavy intro, then the guitars come in slowly at first, then pick up. This song sounds the most like their older material, but is also a good bridge between their previous stuff and the new style.

With "Peace on Earth, War on Stage," Blacklisted manage to tweak their style, keeping it fresh, but manage to keep the same sound that has gained fans all over the country. The only downside is that it is far too short. 4 songs in 6 minutes leaves much more to be desired. However, this does make me really excited again about this band and what is to come in the future.
