Cecilia::Eyes - Here Dead We Lie

Crack Pie   (2011 reviews)

I've mentioned in past reviews that the material I recieve to write about has given me the opportunity to hear music I never would have come across otherwise. The majority of it is garbage. However, every now and then I get something that is far out of my familiar territory that pleasantly surprises me. Cecilia::Eyes joins the small handful of bands that has opened my mind to other genres I've ignored in the past.

The packaging alone was almost too sophisticated for my tastes. This record comes in a jewel case sized box that held the CD in a slipcase and individual leaflets containing the records info. I've never paid to much attention to an albums packaging, but I was impressed immediately.

I still had no idea what to expect musically though. Cecilia::Eyes play instrumental post-rock similar to bands like Mogwai or Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Usually a good reviewer would call the music majestic or atmospheric, but that's generally how I would explain anything. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly how to explain this record. The music is uplifting and depressing all at the same time. I've already spent plenty of time listening to this driving alone at night. Very relaxing, but interesting stuff.

This is a rare album for me. It almost made itself immediately personal, which I find odd for a record with no lyrics. Aside from the track "Anthem For Doomed Youth" that is awful and littered with samples, I love this record. I've been putting off this review for a great while because I didn't know how to give this the review it deserves. The bottom line is that "Here Dead We Lie" is an instrumental album that engulfs the listener into a weird melancholic feeling. Generally I'd never write that kind of cornball honesty, but this record does it for me.
