Stoner rock has become sort of the "in" thing lately. Take a look around and you'll see a lot of bands are popping up that either try to rip off any O'Malley/Anderson project or doing a horrible job trying to sound like an Eyehategod throwaway song.

There's a few diamonds in the rough but a lot of these bands either flat out suck, nail it completely or show a lot of promise.

One of the bands that show a lot of promise is Philadelphia's Deathbeds.

They play a well crafted, mid paced sludge stomp that owes as much to Iron Monkey as it does Crowbar. The tones are just the right amount of fuzz and the drummer definitely provides a solid backbone for them to grow on. They know their instruments well and show it well. They don't let a song get away from them at all. They don't drone on one riff for too long, which a lot of bands forget to do.

My only drawback to this are the vocals. Sure, his voice is fierce but it detracts from the music. The guttural growls don't really mix with this style. On Tyranny of Will and Eighteen Hundred and Froze To Death, they add a high pitched voice to the mix that I think is more appropriate to the style they're playing.

All in all, this is a slab of competent sludge/stoner metal that shows a lot of promise. I'd like to hear where they go from here because with some fine tuning, they could level the City of Brotherly Love.

May have to check this out and there is a difference between Stoner Metal/Rock and Sludge.
