Have Heart - The Things We Carry

Have Heart came onto the scene in 2004 with their debut 7" "What Counts." They quickly became one of the most talked about young bands in hardcore. The 7" showed that the band could potentially become of the most inspirational and important bands around, but that potential was, as of then, not reached.

That has now changed.

The Things We Carry could be one of the most important hardcore albums to come out in years. Frontman Pat Flynn is exactly the sparkplug needed to captivate and inspire the new breed of hardcore fans while giving a breath of fresh air to those who may have become bored with it. Flynn is different both lyrically and style-wise. While he talks about many of the standard positive subjects found in a lot of hardcore these days, it is done in a smart, different way that makes the listener think about what is said. Flynn makes Have Heart stand out amongst most other bands today.

Musicwise, Have Heart blend different styles of hardcore to work together, making a fairly diverse album. Some songs are faster youth crew anthems while others are heavier. On "Old Man Pt. II," one of the highlights of the album, the band ventures into a sound reminiscent of early 90's "emo".

The album ends with another highlight, "Watch Me Rise." It is an uplifting song, delivering one of the most powerful lyrics on the album, "I'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees."

Clocking in at just 22 minutes, The Things We Carry feels like it is over almost as quicky as it begins. It is quick and to the point, delivering what it has to say and then ending, leaving the listener to think about it.

I definately recommend picking this album up. Totally worth it.

I haven't heard this, sounds like something I would like, but I have to comment- "I'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees" is a fairly common sentiment expressed in many songs. But, maybe it's all in the delivery. Definitely sounds like a bad worth checking out, though.

So if by "giving a breath of fresh air" you mean sounding like generic hardcore and ripping off Bouncing Souls lyrics...then yeah, they're sooo innovative and inspirational d00d!!!!!!!!!111

the bouncing souls didn't write those lyrics. hate to break it to you, it's one of those statements that has no known author.

shows how much you know.
