Torche - Songs for Singles

What does Torche sound like? When recommending the Miami trio to friends of mine I ironed out my own response: Torche doesn't sound like a punk band, a metal band or a rock band that you have on your playlist, Torche sounds like Torche. So just trust me.

Songs for Singles EP is a bit lighter and a bit more energetic than 2008's Meanderthal. These guys are very progressive but construct tunes in a seamless fashion to the extent that you won't really notice how involved things are upon first listen. The production here is fantastic and the guitars are fashioned into a smooth fuzzy vintage style sound. Busy fretwork frequently resolves to heavy hooks that seem to demand a second listen if for nothing else to figure out what the hell just happened.

The only thing constant about the sound of this album aside from the groovy guitars is the vocalist's somewhat monotone crooning which frequently reminds me of the baritone drawl of Storm In Heaven era Richard Ashcroft or a less dynamic The Colour and the Shape era Dave Grohl. Leading the band through 8 tracks of guitar driven craziness that seem to cruise through a myriad of genres.

I recommend Torche to just about anybody and their sister seeing as their sound draws from just about any genre young people are into these days. I wouldn't say this album is quite as good as their debut but it is very solid and shouldn't be overlooked, if anything it seems to have a bit more mainstream appeal. I see these guys being a band to watch for the next few years.

Its an EP. And the S/T and In Return EPs are pretty amazing.

Shit's good, not as much balls-deep heaviness but great as usual.

i find it hard to call 8 songs an ep, especially if all the songs are 4+ minutes.

that being said, this album is catchy as fuck and really nothing like meanderthal, but so good.

i've had it for around a month on my itunes. I was super into it at first then remembered how good In Return was and went about my business. Its better than what most bands are doing now,and is in no way a bad record,or recording. I just know that when In Return came out it was just a 7" and people really need to hear that recording.Im not sure if they ever did a CD version?

the cd came with the LP purchase.

good album - a few stand out tracks - but all the up beat punky songs are so forgettable. They need to bring back the heavy.

Not into this one. Meanderthal took their pop leanings far enough.

ya man - enough with these 1.5 minute pop punk songs - they all sound the same and are boring
