I'm sure you're scratching your head seeing White Zombie in the review section, especially with something new. Well this release isn't new at all but a collection of almost every single song that White Zombie ever recorded. This includes the trippy punk of the pre-Geffen days, the major label albums they are famous for, as well as the songs recorded for various movie soundtracks. The last disc of this 5 disc boxset is a DVD containing all the music videos and some various live footage over the years.
To me this is the single greatest music related item that could have ever been released. Being a super geek for White Zombie since roughly 1993, I've always tried to get my hands on the early material. Since EBay auctions get pretty pricey for the old material, I've since settled on downloading the old albums and only occasionally decide to break the bank on one of the early works. This boxset makes it easier to deal with not being able to get my hands on original copies. Eventually I will own an original copy of all the old records but having all the songs in one shot is a pretty good concellation prize.
The best way to review this album would be to break down each disc.
Disc 1 contains material from the very first release from the band, Gods On Voodoo Moon. The 2nd half of the album is the 2nd EP release titled, Psycho-Head Blowout. Jammed in the middle of those two albums is the single 7" called Pig Heaven/Slaughter The Grey. This is the earliest and rawest of all the White Zombie material. Other than Rob's nasal vocals it has no resemblance to the sound they are most famous for. My only complaint with this disc is the Gods On Voodoo Moon portion is missing 2 songs (Black Friday & Dead Or Alive). These songs were only available on the cassette version of the album.
Disc 2 is split in two by the first and 2nd full length releases by the band, Soul-Crusher and Make Them Die Slowly. Progressing from a trippy punk to more of a noise rock these two releases marked the first noticeable style change for the band. Again some key songs were left of this disc that shouldn't have. 4 songs (Dead Ringer, Freak War, Scum Kill II, and Star Slammer) were all recorded for Make Them Die Slowly but never made it on the original record. This would have been on the best times to finally release those songs to the public. To this day I've never heard a single second of any of those songs and I fear I may never hear them.
Disc 3 features the last pre-Geffen release in the form of the 7", God Of Thunder. This record featured a cover of the Kiss song and 2 originals. After God Of Thunder we finally make it to the stuff most are familiar with. 1992's La Sexorcisto starts in at track 3 and finishes this disc off with the exception of the song I Am Hell which was featured on The Beavis & Butthead Experience.
Disc 4 is mostly made up of the ever popular Astro Creep 2000. The final studio album for the band is squeezed between a handful of soundtrack songs including The One (Escape From LA), I'm Your Boogieman (The Crow), and Feed The Gods (Airheads). The disc concludes with the last ever White Zombie song ever recorded which was Ratfinks, Suicide Tanks, and Cannibal Girls. The song was written and recorded solely for the Beavis & Butthead movie soundtrack.
Like I previously said the DVD contains all the music videos and some random live footage from Astro Creep and La Sexorcisto tours.
Although I would have loved to have atleast one more White Zombie record, I feel this is a justified release to be dubbed "The Final Nail In The Coffin" for my all-time favorite band.
good review, although i don't hear any punk in what they did early on. also, the 'god of thunder' ep that i had once was released as a 12" ep, not a 7".
