XXX Maniak/Coffins - S/T / The Cracks of Doom split cd

Take the industrial edge of Ministry, mix it with the humor and mentality of Anal Cunt, then throw in some over the top blast beats and wickedly heavy yet speedy riffs and you get XXX Maniak. Sure you're thinking, what the fuck? But, Matt Moore and co. have the skills and the song writing abilities to pull off this excellent mix of industrial and grindcore.

Even though the songs are short, the execution and production on them are rather flawless. Sure it's a drum machine, but until the blasts kick in, you can't tell with the magic of today's production standards. Everything sits perfect in the mix, the vocals don't over power the song, and the songs are just a joy to listen to, for as demented and fucked up as they are.

Coffins, however on the other hand take a totally different approach to their side of the split. These Japanese doom metalers keep it raw and brutal. There's nothing clean about this recording. This is dirty, gritty, and just feels live you're being buried alive. The two songs are full of doomy drone, feedback and vocals that sound like you've caught the most wicked stomach virus ever, and are just trying to get everything out of your body all at once.

Overall, if you enjoy sick humor and a sludgy slab of doom metal, then this split is what you need in your life.

the Ebony Tears cover is awesome!!! Every doom fan should have to hear Cathedral's "Forest Of Equilibrium". the crazy thing is that the original is actually a little bit slower even than the Coffins version.

in general, great work on the Coffins side, more traditionally doomy than usual.

XXX Maniak side is better than what I've heard from them in the past, but I'm still not quite sure what to think. It's pretty catchy, I'll have to listen to it more to take it in. WIERD.

nothing about 3xm is supposed to be taken seriously. matt moore is a sick guitar player when he's being serious.

amazing

also...i did some vocals for some of these tracks. i think these are the most FUN xxx maniak songs, but personally, i think matt's never captured the assaulting drum sound from the triton rack he had on the first recording.

also, needs more fun, home made samples :)

drum kit from hell destroys any other drum machine/program. tell matt to get with the times.
