Let me preface this entire review with this... until I put this record on during my drive to take my sister to the airport at 6:00am this morning, I had never heard Plow United. Growing up in Maryland in the 1990's, I was aware of them during their initial 7 year stint since they were a stones throw away in Delaware. However for whatever reason, their songs never graced my young and tender teenage ears.
As soon as I delved several songs deep into this collection, it dawned on me how oddly familiar all of these songs were. This was a perplexing thing since I had never heard any of them, but there was a definite sense of familiarity. At about the midway point, I knew why that was. This record sounds exactly like any given local pop punk band that I was friends with or would see at shows during my teenage years... only much better. This is a fact that I found to be incredibly comforting and since that drive to the airport this morning, I've listened to this entire retrospective 4 times through. For a record I have never heard, it is truly incredible how these songs can remind me of easier times when I didn't have to worry about coming up with the rent, child support payments or that weird noise my car is making... but more of a time when all I cared about was skateboarding, Fat Wreck compilations and trying to lose my virginity.
For those of you that need a more literal explanation... Plow United is a pop punk band from Wilmington, DE that had a brief run in the 1990's and has recently reunited. This 34-track retrospective covers every track they recorded during their original stint. Every song is as catchy as it is sloppy, but in the era that these songs were written... that is exactly how we liked it. We didn't care about tone or technical proficiency. We just wanted to have fun and that is exactly what these songs are... fun.
If you grew up during the 1990's and listened to pop punk, these songs will induce an undeniable sense of nostalgia. Plow United represent a time when life was care-free and for those of you who can relate, I think we could all use a reminder of what our lives used to be like.
FYI... Plow United reunited in 2011 to play Riot Fest in Philadelphia and have since decided to keep it going and possibly release a new record... fingers crossed.
