In 2001 I first became aware of Aborted. This was with the album Engineering the Dead. I greatly enjoyed it, but then 2003's Goremageddon came out and I was completely hooked. This album set the bar really high for them and was casting a mighty big shadow on subsequent albums.
The followup, Archaic Abatoir, was a bit of a letdown. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't anywhere close to prior releases. It had more of a hardcore sound. To me, a 90s Euro metalcore influence. While I enjoy that style, I didn't feel it was suited for a band that wrote Goremageddon. The album did have some standout moments.
The next two albums were still a bit of a letdown, but their last full length was the biggest bummer. Strychnine was just bland and boring. It was like Aborted light meets groove metal and metalcore. Absolutely nothing memorable on it. I was ready to write the band off.
Fast forward to 2010, the band had drastic lineup changes and they released the Coronary Reconstruction ep. I checked it out with hopes of them being good again and it destroyed any expectations I had as well as renewed my faith in the band. It did take a little to grow on me, but it was the perfect blend of early Aborted meets Archaic Abatoir. The ep had me amped for Global Flatline. In interviews they were saying they were faster, more brutal than ever, and fans of Goremageddon would be stoked.
They weren't lying. Global Flatline is without a shadow of a doubt the best album they're written since Goremageddon. This release absolutely crushes and destroys the previous ep (even if 3 of those songs are on this album). It's blasting, brutal, heavy, and at times grooving. Everything I originally loved about the band is back. The best part is it doesn't sound forced as if they went back just to please the fans that wanted Goremageddon part 2. It's also awesome that it's this good and is truly not a replica of that album. The only slightly negative thing I can say is the track Endstille felt a little long and at times monotonous. There are 12 crushing tracks that come before it, so I can't pay no mind to little things like that. Global Flatline is 100% the Aborted album many longtime fans have been waiting for.
