We all know his history.

Since Varg Vikernes was released from prison he his music has taken a more Viking/Folk lead. I enjoyed Fallen and Belus quite a bit for what they were but they failed to get repeated listens as the year grew on for each release. On Umskiptar I really enjoy where Varg has taken his music. He has capitalized on what I enjoyed about his recent offerings, he really conveys a feeling of being in Scandinavia during a time of Viking Rule.

The songs are melodic and quite interesting sound wise, I really feel he has found his stride song writing and production wise. Plenty of melody but the dissonance that has made Black Metal famous is in the forefront as well. While I can't speak much on the lyrics since I don't speak Norwegian they are apparently taken from the Norse Poem "Voluspa". That could intrigue certain crowds and I like how that fills the whole idea of what Varg is going for these days out.

Make no mistake this isn't Black Metal. If you have followed Burzum in the recent years, that won't surprise you. This album is probably the best he has released since his 90s heyday. But the one thing that dragged down Belus and Fallen is present here as well. I just don't really see myself listening repeatedly or often. That shouldn't deter you because this is damn good album it is just not fitting for every day or mood. If you are interested in Burzum, check it out.

i love it, but then i also love Fallen, a lot, and Belus, a lot, this is another new approach, and there are no signs of weakness yet at all, his post-jail work is better than his early 90s stuff IMO.
