Sofy Major/Membrane - Split

Two bands I have never heard of, oh man was I missing out. Sofy Major and Membrane are two bands from France that are playing some of the best Heavy Music around.

Sofy Major start it off with their take on Sludge with a Noise rock twinge. The first track Ruin it All gives you a pretty good example of what this whole split is about. A brooding combination of Noise Rock and the Darker Sides of Sludge. When you hit Once Was a Warrior you see where Sofy Major are taking this. Sofy Major bang out a few tracks of Stoned Sludge that sounds like it could have come from the Deep South of the USA. All of this with a distinct nod to the Noise Rock that we were blessed with in the 90s(which is making a resurgence). The vocals are very akin to Sludge Metal as well, the usual gruff bark with the occasional clean vocals.

Membranes three tracks are where it gets dark and a little more off the rails so to speak. The first Membrane track Gruesome Trails is a plodding song with an atonal riff and chunky bass for much of the song with little variation, but it works and paints a very misanthropic image. The next track Small Fires is the stand out track to me. It is based around another atonal riff but this song progresses much further than the first and really shows off Membrane's songwriting ability. The craftsmanship of this song is superb. The vocals on Membrane's end of the split or more par for the Noise Rock course, with muffled yells and nasal heavy vocals, which you either love or hate with this type of music. I dig it.

All in all this record is worth everyone's time. You get riffs all over the place. The production is top notch, plenty of feedback and fuzz but everything still comes through crystal clear. If you like riffs and bass heavy Rock or Metal/Hardcore, then this is a must listen.
