Boatrocker - Antagonize

In the 2 or so years since the release of Delicious Jams, there has obviously been a great deal of growth and maturation as musicians and songwriters within Delaware's Boatrocker. As my review of their previous material states (seen here) they employ a sound that, assuming your age, will remind you of late 90's to early 2000's post-hardcore in the vein of bands like Small Brown Bike and Thursday. In that review, I made note of their strong sense of composition... and on their newest release Antagonize, it is not only still true... it is even more evident. Every song is unique and occupies its own niche in the grand scheme of this record. The overall flow and juxtaposition quiet and raucous sounds all contained in one piece of music make the journey from one song to the next a very enjoyable listening experience. I applaud them for creating a cohesive, complete thought of a record while keeping you on your toes... as that is something I feel to be a rare feat in this day and age.

What sets Antagonize apart from their previous record is the incorporation of even more sonic influences. Right along side of their draw from indie rock/punk is their obvious love of metal. Some of these songs border on the realm of black metal with their frenzied beats and frantic guitar playing. That is not to say that it is in stark contrast to the rest of the material because as mentioned before... these guys are masters of composition. It all fits together wonderfully and embodies the diversity of this genre... which is what made me love it in the first place.

Boatrocker have yet again released an incredible record. My only hope is that it doesn't go unnoticed and sees a proper release on vinyl some day (not only for the incredible music... but the stunning artwork). After putting out one of the best debuts of any band of their ilk (2011's Delicious Jams), I am completely at a loss as to why they haven't been scooped up by a label and playing to packed rooms every night. I sincerely hope that Antagonize changes all of that because it is that good.

The entire record is streaming right here on Sterekiller.com.

Thanks for another solid review, Matt!

I'd totally love to do a vinyl release -- if people like the album enough to spend money on it we'd definitely put any money toward a physical record. Broke as fuck, though.

This is so fucking awesome! I agree with Matt. There is no reason in hell why you guys shouldn't be getting an offer from a label. I like every song, even the one about atheists!
