In case you haven't heard of them, Charm City Devils is a hard rock band hailing from Baltimore. Their sound seems to be comprised of older influences like Guns n' Roses and Aerosmith, while still retaining a modern edge that reminds me at times of The Damned Things.

The CD starts out with the energetic "Tear it Apart." This song has my favorite chorus on the CD. The vocals absolutely soar and have an infectious melody that makes this song stand out as a memorable one. Next up is "Crucify" which has a real laid-back sleazy, bluesy feel to it. Listening to this track sounds like you're treading down a sketchy alleyway. I like the fact that the album is varied, which you can tell from the first few tracks.

Although a lot of the album is comprised of high-energy, bluesy hard rock, the band obviously has dynamics in mind. Songs like "Everyday" and "Karma" know when to lay back and when to go for the listener's throat. I also really enjoyed "Let it Go" (no not a cover of the Disney song thankfully) which is the most reserved we see the band. It's the only song that could really be classified as a ballad, and it's a memorable one.

Charm City Devils are chock-full of dirty, down-tuned riffs and gritty, soaring vocals to match but at the end of this record I can't say I was really impressed in any way. The songs are well-written and well-recorded, and the band sounds pretty tight. However, this is a genre that is so over-saturated it's hard to say anything on this CD is original. It's all just too familiar and doesn't really stand on its own. Also, the lyrics at times are nothing to write home about and cliched (especially in "Shots" and "Karma"). Battles is a good record, but that's it. It's nothing extraordinary and most likely if you've listened to hard rock stuff before you're not going to find anything new here. But if you are a huge fan of the genre and/or already a fan of the band, it's at least worth checking out.
