Review:
I have no qualms about being a nerd, and apparently neither does this band. Their name means "druid of the stone forest" in Finnish, they sing all about epic fairy shit that involves battles in the forest, killing trolls and other sorts of weird shit that'll make you wish your parents bought you a deck of Magic cards instead of that basketball as a kid, and yes, they wear loincloths and have elf ears. I don't know about that last part, but judging by the music alone, they may have just sprouted them one day while on a quest to save hobbits from the clutches of Ring Wraiths.
The music is pretty much power metal, with soaring leads, blast beats, tons of symphonic keyboards, and a rather buxom wench singing in an operatic style, which kind of reminds me of Nightwish at times, and a growling/screaming vocalist who does his best Wintersun impression.
The recording is excellent. For as much stuff that's being layer on top of each other, it doesn't clutter up the record, but gives off a vibe of clarity. Between the overabundance of orchestration, guitar leads/melodies, and everything else, it plays out like an hour long epic adventure loaded with mead, wenches, and the occasional dragon slaying.
Overall, this record surprised me. I figured I'd end up hating it, but apparently my inner nerd took over, raised his sword of omens and declared battle amongst non nerds. Pick up this record if you dig epic metal.
