Review:
You want to know what this record sounds like? Turn on any pop/rock radio station and wait for a song to come on with a catchy chorus and some chick singing through an autotuner. Wahlah, you have Lesley Roy's "Unbeautiful."
Imagine, if you will, all the songs that weren't good enough to make it on a Kelly Clarkson album and they'll magically appear on this one. Sure, it's packed full of melodic hooks, mind-numbing choruses, and plenty of teen girl angst that you'll be thinking "hey, this is kinda catchy, up beat, oh yeah it's pop music." There's so many layers of vocals, guitars, keyboards that you could make a drinking game out of picking the shit out every time you go through one of the songs.
For as many "rocking" numbers, there's also a handful of ballads on this record, with somber pianos and some string ensembles to show that sensitive side of ms. Roy. Unfortunately, her voice is way to husky and raspy to go along with the songs. She tries her hardest to belt them out, but turns out singing more like the dude from Nickelback than herself.
There's really no need to go into production value, since it's basically a staple in the Jive Records contract that you have to sound polished as fuck and fit those pop standards perfectly.
Overall, if you're looking for a sugar rush without sucking down a box of Oreos, then give this record a shot.
