Review:
I'm just going to start by saying that I love Cannibal Corpse. I remember being obsessed with them in early high school and changing all the computer room screen savers to song titles like "Entrails Ripped From A Virgin's Cunt" and "Addicted To Vaginal Skin". I used to get truly excited when they put out a new album and would end up listening to it continuously for weeks until I finally needed a break.
It's been a long time since I've felt that way about a new Corpse record. Vile was really the last record that I played to death. As a matter of fact I listened to that CD so much that I wound up ruining it and had to go out and buy a new one. The last few records had some great songs on it but with each release they bad songs started to outweigh the good by more and more. The Wretched Spawn had about 3 songs I could tolerate to the 10 I couldn't really care less about.
Just when I thought Cannibal Corpse should call it a day they unleashed the album Kill in 2006 and my breath was taken away from me. They seemed to have found their energy again and cranked out an album that was heavy, pissed, and awesome. The best part is that aggression lasted for all 13 songs. I once again became excited for Cannibal Corpse.
The new album, Evisceration Plague, takes off right where Kill left off. I give a lot of credit to the return of Rob Barrett and deciding to work with Erik Rutan for the production. The guitars have a new crunch to them that they've never had before and all the songs are solid, heavy and straight forward death metal. The probably should have named this record, The Kings Are Back.
Most of the songs have structures that remind me a lot of Vile but with the new sound they take on a form all their own. George Fisher still commands the microphone like very few in the genre can and Alex Webster is still a beast with the bass. Even though Paul Mazurkiewicz isn't one of the genre's standout drummers, his style still meshes perfectly with the rest of the band. This album is about as flawless as you can get for a Cannibal Corpse record.
If you ever liked Cannibal Corpse in the past but gave up on them years ago, its time to dust off the oldies and buy this new record (get Kill too while you are at it).
