Review:
I should probably start to write a template for reviews for deathcore bands. I'll just change the band name and album title and I can say the same exact thing about each album because they all sound exactly the same anymore. SLC's Chelsea Grin is definitely not the exception to the rule.
Aside from the obvious reason of being "cool", why do kids with any musical talent opt to go the easy route and write generic sounding music? If I could personally play an instrument fairly well, I'd want to push my creativity and write something that is original. Following a cookie cutter pattern set by other bands is almost as bad as just being a simple cover band.
Every single element of this band and their music has been done 100 times before them. Their guitars are tuned to sound exactly like Beneath The Massacre and Despised Icon. Their tight clothing and girl haircuts have been done by a million bands that don't even deserve to be mentioned. Using pornography or a movie clips that are suppose to be sexually funny isn't original. And of course they have the big music pause to say something "hilarious" about a girl being promiscuous right before the huge bass drop into the same breakdown I've heard 33 times before on this record alone. It all just says "boring, boring, boring".
The vocalist also kills anything the band might have going for them. His lows are pretty standard and get no real complaint or compliment but his high screeching is more than irritating and I like Dani Filth's vocals, so that has to say something. He also dips into the most aggravating vocal style of this terrible genre by resorting to use the now infamous "Pig Squeals". It was truly upsetting to have to sit through.
Sure the breakdowns are "massive" and at times they do play some pretty technical guitar licks but all those parts offer nothing new or creative. The deathcore genre is played out. Every band sounds almost exactly the same and as I said Chelsea Grin is offering nothing new. I cannot recommend this album to anyone unless they have insomnia, because you are sure to fall asleep listening to this.
