Review:
After being let down by the new Edguy record, this record completely made up for it. This is my first time ever hearing of Wolf and it appears that they have three albums prior to Ravenous. If this record is any indication of what those previous records sound like, I'm getting all of them.
The easiest way for me to describe the musical style would be to throw Iron Maiden, Hammerfall, and some old school melodic thrash into a blender. The end result would be Wolf. I really had no idea what to expect going into this but am greatly pleased with my discovery. With a name like Wolf I half kind of expected some heavy southern rock influence nu-metal. What I got was a record that is melodic, catchy, and totally shreds from start to finish. This is the type of record that will spark one of those power metal phases I was talking about in the Edguy review.
I really can't complain about this record at all. I have most of the choruses already stuck in my head. The guitarists can play their asses off but don't get crazy like Dragonforce to where all the songs start to sound the same. They have memorable riffs that, do I dare compare to Iron Maiden? Vocally, Niklas Stalvind sounds like a cross between Bruce Dickenson and Joacim Cans (hence the Hammerfall comparison).
Seriously, this record is awesome. It's obviously meant for fans of power metal but I think anyone that appreciates melodic thrash will really enjoy this. I know that I'm going to be rocking this album for some time.
