Review:
This record really caught me off guard. From beginning to the end In Shame is raw and pissed off. The blend of the fast, more punk influenced styling of bands like Outbreak and Bracewar is fused together nicely with the hard edged chugginess of Ill Blood era No Warning. Add to that a vocalist that sounds like Jason Shevchuk of Kid Dynamite at his angriest and you'll get the total package that is Swamp Thing.
Judging a book by its cover will almost always be something I do when coming across new music. When I first picked up the Swamp Thing record, I really thought I was going to be listening the newest big bar band that I would have a great chance seeing on the marquee at The Pennant in Bellmawr, NJ. Instead I was delivered a 20 minute dose of fast paced, in your face punk influence hardcore.
The only negative aspect of this record comes in the form of the lyrical content. There are parts that are definitely meant to be singalongs live and they are filled with overly angst lyrics like "pick the pockets of the ones you love, we all carry knives to cut our throats". I'd expect something like from the next band that wants to sound like Thursday over a band with a style in vain of Down To Nothing.
If you can get passed some of the lyrics you'll have yourself a good time with this record. If they have the energy live as they do on record they'll be the band everyone talks about very shortly. I'm not the biggest old school fan but these guys hooked me. Their blend of old and new school stylings mixed with the obvious punk influence and their unrelenting energy works for me. Plus they have the same name as a pretty ridiculous movie. I'm looking forward to seeing them play a show in my area. I'm definitely interested in checking them out live.
