Review:
"FutureRecordings" artist Sunlight Ascending's July 2009 release, "All The Memories, All At Once", is one of the best Post Rock releases, if not the best thus far, of 2009. This minor masterpiece is built around the composing wizardry of guitarist/keyboardist James Schultz and his brother Jeremy on drums. They're from Detroit where instrumental music just doesn't appeal to the mass audience but the Motor City mojo rubs off on these lads (and lassie) nonetheless. With angelic Trish Chisholm honing in on bass and guitar and fellow guitarists Sean Reed and Andy McIlwane adding to the big, big sound, SA will be a force to be reckoned with in the future I'm sure. This CD has it all...epic constructions, ambience throughout and emotion to last a lifetime...and most of the members are still in high school! (How do they do it?) The title track and 'Four' are stalwart compostions and tunes like 'Black Bear' and 'Requiescat' travel familair post-rock roads with slow build-ups and tremendous crescendos but with that Motor City grit mentioned earlier which distinguishes them from their contemporaries. The musicianship is high quality but not the end all here and I see that only getting better and better as they all mature as artists. It's the quality of the compositions that set this CD into the next hemisphere. It must be scary for the established lot of post-rockers to listen to this CD and see the future of the genre coming up from behind with guns fully loaded and ready for battle. This is a fantastic CD!
