Review:
Vegan deathmetalers Cattle Decapitation are back with their 6th release entitled, The Harvest Floor. It also marks the longest gap in releases between this record and 2006’s, Karma Bloody Karma.
Although Cattle Decapitation has had 3 releases since the last time I listened to them. From what I remembered they were a semi boring outing with a fantastic vocalist. Everything they did technically always seemed very bland and although I did kind of dig To Serve Man at first, it quickly went into the dust collecting pile. I don’t think I’ve touched the disc since a month or two after it came out. Well since it’s been nearly 7 years since the last time I listened to them, I figured they had to do something right to continue to last as a band this long. Back in 2002 they seemed to be on every major death metal tour and while they played, nearly the entire floor collectively yawned for the whole set.
The Harvest Floor almost barely reminds me of what I listened to all those years ago. The song writing has seemed to take on a new creative level. The last time I listened to these guys it was just boring mediocre metal with some bland technical parts. Now the sound is beefed up and contains a little bit more thrash and chug to break up the monotony. And at times they break off into something that closely resembles black metal. It’s a much different approach then what I’m used to from the band.
Travis Ryan still has one of the best vocals I’ve ever heard in death metal. His ranges of highs and lows are incredible and I don’t know many people that match him. Even live he is able to convey that voice that sounds remarkably like studio magic rather than an actual human. He still shines on this record as well.
For everything that Cattle Decapitation has done right to improve on their sound from the last time I gave them a listen, they still can’t manage to write a solid song that can hold my attention. The album sounds great and they did make improvements in leaps and bounds from 7 years ago, but they are still boring. There wasn’t one song on this record that I really liked enough to want to sit through it again. Don’t get me wrong the album isn’t a total waste but it really felt just like a series of awesome parts ruined by lots of staleness in between them.
If you liked Cattle Decapitation when they were shoved in your face for practically every death metal tour a few years ago, then you’ll love this record. If you hated them back in the day or just didn’t even care, you’ll still feel the same way when you are finished with this record. This album is just a polished turd. It may look nice on the outside but it’s still just a piece of shit.
