LAGO was founded in January 2010 and released their first EP, Marianas, on Pale Horse Records to critical acclaim in November 2010. Following two subsequent demos, LAGO fully erupted into the scene in 2014 with the release of their Tyranny debut LP through Battleground Records. The record showed the band delivering a ferocious brew of classic but modernized death metal, surrounded in a blackened fog, wholly bearing an oppressive atmosphere, and received acclaim from a wide array of respected media outlets and fans alike.
Following some personnel restructuring over the next year, LAGO returned with a new lineup in 2016, immediately issuing a split 7" with Poland's Calm Hatchery, which saw co-release through Battleground Records and Selfmadegod Records. LAGO's prior attributes on the succinct but flooring new release were magnified from their prior material, sounding more ferocious and technically-advanced than ever before.
In a review of the material on LAGO's split with Calm Hatchery, Trevor Strnad from The Black Dahlia Murder published via Metal Injection, "Like innovators Morbid Angel, LAGO do their evil thing with a lot of confidence and otherworldly style. It's creative, organic, and atmospheric death metal wizardry that oozes with real feelings of arcane magic. These dudes sell an impressive spaced out/cosmic vibe that is very believable... one that has me eager to hear their next move, also prompting me to dive into their back catalog for further investigation." Loudwire referred to LAGO as, "drill-to-the-core-of-the-earth type of death metal, feverishly heaving away chunks of earth with Suffocation-like breakdowns," and Invisible Oranges issued, "the Phoenix quartet plays competent and well-executed death metal; no more, no less. Besides a blackened foray here and a chamber music segue there, they blast along like streamlined icons, strengthened by a proven Floridian flow. And LAGO just make this stuff work: there's one great riff nestled in each song..."
