quite a bit to talk about here, just in the last 48 hours alone hithcock was fired, and the thrashers announced they will be trading kovalchuk. ducks and flames made moves already. the hurricanes are awful, the wings are dissapointing. coyotes were bankrupt and eyeing home ice in the playoffs...lets discuss....

I've been hearing rumors of a Hartnell for kovalchuk trade.

I've been hearing rumors of Hartnell trades for awhlie. First it there was that talk of Carter fucking his wife and a possible trade due to that, now this.

The biggest surprise to me has been the play of the Colorado Avalanche. I voiced my prediction at the beginning of the season that they'd be finishing dead last in the west again this year. They've been proving me wrong all season. It's really unbelievable how well they're playing

I've also been really impressed by the emergence of Steve Stamkos, he's been overshadowing St. Louis and especially Lecavalier all season.

in the west, id say the avs, yotes, kings and preds have been surprisingly good. wings, blues and bluejackets surprisingly bad. Not surprised to see names like crosby, ovechkin and thornton in the running for most points but henrik sedin leading the league so far is a bit of a surprise. Marleau and Gaborik are having great seasons so far as well but they have always been great players so not too surprising

the east has fewer surprises. Everyone knew the Caps and Pens were going to be two of the best. Devils, Senators and Sabres have been better than I expected. Flyers, Habs and Bruins have underacheived. And for Carolina to be so bad after reaching the conf finals is a bit surprising.

Carter and Vanek have been disappointing as far goal scoring. Both conf playoff races are tight which will make for a great race down the stretch. If I had to predict now, Id say Caps vs Blackhawks in the cup finals

How about marleau loosing the C and leading the league in goals

yeah, avalanche look solid...i'm surprised at how sloppy the bruins look. i'm incredibly impressed at the blackhawks organization for what they've done, they're a force for at least the next 5 years

Ryan Potulny scoring the game winner for edmonton with 16 seconds left in the game last night was a surprise. Refs calling a pentaly on the flyers with two mins left in a tie game unfortunately not a surprise

that will never happen, we'd need to offer way more than that. hartnell is a fucking bum

kovy rejected the 101 million dollar offer because of failing relations on the thrashers, he doesnt want to be part of a sinking ship for 12 years. i dont blame him. he most likely wants a cup, and will probably be like hossa, never tied down more than 5 years

I don't know how the coyotes are doing it, I just recently went to a wings and coyotes game and it was an amazing game. I don't know whats going on with the wings though. They're disappointing me this year. :(

As great as Jimmy Howard has been this season, I wouldn't trust him to carry them too far in the playoffs, same deal with Osgood. They just look flat and lifeless this year when I've watched them play, I'm not sure what it is. I made a longwinded post about the Red Wings in the NHL thread, but no one bothered to offer their opinion lol.

As for teams

Letdowns:
Flyers
Rangers
Boston

Ottawa playing solid is a suprise.

Avs, Yotes, and Kings are all suprises in the west. I think Nashvilles play has been solid since i thought they would have a worse record right now.

I think out of Phoenix, Colorado and LA one of them will slow down and miss the playoffs.

I still see the wings making the playoffs anywhere on the top 8 really.

It's funny how Phoenix gets a great, experienced head coach like Dave Tippet and completely turn it around after several dismal years of Gretzky coaching. I think Wayne should've coached in the AHL or WHL for awhile before stepping behind the bench on an NHL hockey club.

For a team with the amount of injuries they've had to key players, they haven't done too bad to be honest. They're not dominant, but they're still in the playoff race in a competitive conference...most teams would completely collapse with all those injuries (including the offseason losses). I give them props for staying alive while guys like zetterberg (only for a couple), cleary, filppula, rafalski(missed a few),holmstrom, kronwall, ericsson, franzen, etc... are missing games.

I know Franzen has been out and that's hurt them offensively (but Holmstrom is having a better season this year), Hudler is out, and they don't have Hossa (but they won a cup without him the season beforehand). Jimmy Howard has been outstanding, he's stepped up and played better than anyone could have asked him to. I just don't understand what's lacking this year. I know they're getting older as a team (Lidstrom certainly isn't getting any younger), but they have some bright young players too (Helm, Abdelkater, etc). The times I've watched them this season they just look sort of flat and lifeless. Datsyuk is having an off year too, doesn't help when your hart trophy candidate isn't scoring goals.

But really though, I don't get it.

Here's my post from the other thread. Yeah, they've had a lot of injuries, but most of them have been relatively short term aside from Franzen.

And here is my post again...haha man I understand that you mentioned the injuries in your previous post in the NHL thread. I read that when you wrote it, but it still doesn't take away from the fact that a lot of teams couldn't function half as well this far into a season with the amount of listed injuries, and losing some good players in the offseason. For the Redwings, this isn't the best hockey and we expect them to be dominant like they always are, but for a nother team like say the Rangers or Calgary(just pointing these teams out since you watch them, and not to offend). If they lost that many starting players unexpectedly during a regular season going up until now, would you expect them to be in the run for a playoff spot (atcually tied for 8th I think)with 64 pts in 57 games? Now that they've gotten most of their injuries in order (Franzen returning this week) I expect them to pick it up even more like they have been doing as they've gotten each player back so far. It's not like Detroit is under .500 or something, it's just in comparison to their previous years

Also most of the players injured have missed 10 + games, around 9 players, including Franzen, Filppula, and Kronwall's long term absences
