i have been playing on seriously ghetto equipment for a long time and now its time for an upgrade. i admit i dont know shit about anything amplifier-related. i have a 120 watt head and 120w cabinet now. what is the highest-wattage cabinet i could use with that head? someone explain this to me.
You can pretty much go as high as you want, but for the higher wattage you go on cabinets, the less "natural" breakup you'll get from the speakers. For instance I found that using 2 cabs that were 160 watts a piece gave me a lot of freedom with a 150/200 watt amp. Hope that helps!
Also, solid state is not equal to tubes in terms of wattage. A 120 watt solid state half stack will get blown out of the water by a 40 watt 1x12 tube combo.
