Spirit Adrift, whose newly released album Divided By Darkness was just released and reviewed by yours truly, played a headlining set at Saint Vitus in Brooklyn this past Tuesday. The night kicked off with Boston act Coagula, furious blast beats alternated with chugging d-beat-esque breakdowns and guttural vocals.

Second was Southern Lord Records act High Command, who's frontman immediately commanded the room's attention with a FUCKING SWORD. Slamming it down into the wooden stage and grabbing the microphone, the band begun a thrashy assault that got the entire room headbanging in unison. There was no letting up as the band ripped through riff after riff, and it definitely has me itching to check out the band more in depth.

As Spirit Adrift took the stage, a quick introduction from vocalist/guitarist Nate Garrett led into the title track from their previous record in "Curse Of Conception". Their live sound was crushing and astoundingly accurate to the band's recordings, Garrett's voice nailing every note and blanketed in just the right amount of reverb for that epic, classic feel of 80's metal records. The twin guitar track alternating between crushing rhythms and melodic leads, guitarist Jeff Owens really knew when to lean in on the leads and Chase Mason maintained a tight rhythm section with drummer Marcus Bryant.

The band's eight song set just about pulled evenly from both Curse and Divided By Darkness, and the enthusiasm for playing new material was really evident on "Born Into Fire" and "Angels & Abyss". Overall it was a fantastic night for heavy metal, and I highly recommended getting out to one of their remaining tour dates to check it out!
