Saint Vitus - COD (Children of Doom)
Any how, being somewhat new to this whole genre of music, I'm glad this fell onto my computer. I've always been a Black Sabbath fan, for as long as I can remember. So this was right up my new found musical alley.
After a minute and 40 second long intro of water running and other noises along side some monk type moaning, the album kicks off into Doom Metal bliss. Children of Doom, the title track booms across the universe through my little laptop computer speakers but seemingly shaking the entire house.
Yeah, its like that. Real heavy and sludgy shit that does not let up. Kinda like these guys' career!
COD resembles Black Sabbath's song “Black Sabbath”, even the vocals kind of sound a bit like Ozzy's. But that's not taking away anything from Saint Vitus. Actually, the entire album has a real Sabbath feel to it. Again, not taking ANYTHING away from Saint Vitus, these guys' music can stand on its own, I think the 20 year career is saying that in itself. And besides, these dudes look tougher than nails, so I wouldn't argue the point with them, just saying.
Anyhow, the album is full of all things Doom. Its down right spooky how dark this album feels.
And being that this is a reissue from 1994, these Godfathers of American Doom are Dooming it right (Ha! Get it? OK, never mind.). Included on this album reissue is also two bonus tracks- “To Breed A Soldier” and “The Chameleon”. Both are excellent tracks that definitely add flavor to an already bad ass album.
There isn't much else one can say about this album or band. If you like Doom/Sludge metal, you will probably like this album. If you are a fan of Black Sabbath, you will probably like this band. If you want something heavy but not Thrash or Death metal, you, again, will probably enjoy this album. So get nice and elevated, throw on the black light and trip out while trying to figure out the universe. That's what I plan on doing.
Before I end this though, I would like to add a piece of Saint Vitus trivia, I'm sure this isn't going to be new to some, but to a new comer like me, well you never know-Saint Vitus are named after a boy Saint whose beheading and death-throes gave way to the awful expression of “The Saint Vitus Dance”, it was also the name of a Black Sabbath song off of the Vol. 4 album. Interesting. By the way, there are plenty of other albums of Saint Vitus out there, so if this one didn't catch your fancy, I'm sure there is something out there for you to enjoy.
